Start DC talks with the founders of the popular K Street Korean Food Truck.

The food cart is undoubtedly a part of the DC food—and entrepreneur—scene. Food carts need less capital to start than traditional restaurant spaces and can therefore be an important way for local chefs to test their concepts and develop a following before making a larger investment in a storefront.

This week, I’m highlighting the fabled “Korean food truck,” a reliably placed (although unmarked) truck stationed at 1425 K Street NW Mondays to Fridays. Each weekday, starting at about 11:30am, workers trickle out of nearby offices and queue for hot rice and cool pickled vegetables, served with a smile by Kevin and Angie Suh.

The truck’s official name is Korean Food Vendors, and the husband-and-wife team has been dishing out bulgogi (Korean-style grilled, marinated meat) and bibimbap (literally “mixed rice”—warm rice with meat and vegetables) for six years.

Name: Korean Food Vendors

Location: 1425 K Street NW

Founder’s favorite: I asked Kevin to name is favorite item on the menu and he pointed to a helpful diagram on the side of the truck and said, “Definitely bibimbap. It’s very popular!” He also recommends the beef bulgogi.

Price: $7-$9

Tips: Get there early. There is often a line by noon and it’s not uncommon for popular items to be sold out by 1:00pm.

The food comes expertly and efficiently bundled with plastic utensils, chopsticks, and a napkin. Complimentary sesame and hot sauce is served with the bibimbap. Kevin and Angie are super friendly. Good food and good vibes!
